The town of Knysna, one of South Africa’s most picturesque coastal gems, is setting a course for inclusive growth in the blue economy. The African Coastal Marine and Maritime Tourism Alliance (ACMMTA), in partnership with the Knysna Local Municipality, has launched a Marine Tourism Business Incubation Programme designed to empower local youth and women through training, business support, and real-world maritime opportunities.

Building Skills for the Marine Economy
The programme will recruit 15 participants, focusing on equipping them with skipper licences (for cruise boat operations) and business management skills. Beyond training, the participants will also benefit from a two-year incubation and mentorship programme, ensuring they gain not just certificates, but also the confidence and networks required to succeed in the maritime tourism industry.
From Training to Tourism Operations
The long-term vision is ambitious but practical: two cruise boats, operated by the trainees themselves, will be introduced to Knysna’s tourism scene. This initiative aims to expand local tourism offerings while simultaneously creating jobs, supporting small enterprises, and nurturing the next generation of marine tourism operators.
Who Can Apply?
The programme specifically targets:
- * Youth aged 18 to 35 years.
- * Residents of Knysna.
- * Applicants with Matric including Pure Mathematics and Physical Science, or proven experience in entrepreneurship.
In line with its inclusive approach, the programme reserves 60% of spaces for women, ensuring that female entrepreneurs and operators are given priority in this growing industry.
Benefits for Participants
Participants can look forward to:
- * Skipper licence training for the cruise boat business.
- * Business skills development workshops.
- * Mentorship and incubation support for two years.
This structured support is designed to produce sustainable businesses that can thrive beyond the life of the incubation programme.
Community Information Sessions
To provide further guidance, community info sessions will be held on 26 and 27 August 2025 at the Hornlee Club House, Knysna. Interested applicants are encouraged to attend to learn more about the programme requirements and opportunities.
Driving Inclusive Growth in Coastal Tourism
Knysna’s new incubation programme is more than just a training project—it is a model for how communities can leverage South Africa’s coastal and inland waterway assets to drive sustainable, inclusive development. By focusing on skills, entrepreneurship, and ownership, this partnership is ensuring that local people—not just outside investors—benefit from tourism growth.
